The Four Seasons Apprenticeship Programme Class of 2010

.
.
.
The Four Seasons
Apprenticeship Programme
Class of 2010
1 June 2009 – 31 May 2010

Your first step towards a successful career in the Hotel business

Overview
The Four Seasons Apprenticeship Programme is a vocational training scheme for young Maldivians who wish to enter the hotel business and intend to make this exciting industry their career. Designed and run by Four Seasons Resorts Maldives, the programme’s objective is to provide hotel apprentices a firm platform of theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to successfully perform in today’s competitive working environment. Since its inception in 2002, over 150 Maldivian students have graduated from the programme.

Vocational training
Unlike an academic or management programme, the Four Seasons Apprenticeship is aimed at young persons with little or no working experience and who are at the beginning of their careers. Through a combination of intensive practical on-the-job training and weekly classroom sessions, apprentices are trained to become solid professionals in their vocational field.

The underlying concept of the programme is that of learning on the job. Classroom sessions are designed to cover material being taught in practice and are presented by senior hotel managers with many years of international experience in the deluxe hotel, dive and marine industries. Every apprentice is assigned a buddy and a mentor to provide support, encouragement and counselling.

The one year programme consists of two main blocks of training. The divisional training allows the apprentice an overview into all areas of the chosen discipline. Following this, he or she will begin a 23 week specialization training to acquire in-depth knowledge and skills in a chosen particular area and to consolidate the knowledge and skills learned. Throughout the year, the apprentice will work in the hotel operation during 5 days of the week and will attend theory and language classes on one day per week. Upon successful passing of intermediate tests and final exams, a certificate of completion is given to the apprentice who is then free to choose his or her next career step.

Character Building
One of the pre-requisites for a successful completion of the Apprenticeship is a high degree of personal commitment and maturity. During the practical training, apprentices work along with experienced professionals who take pride in passing on their knowledge. Working hard and feeling part of an ambitious team builds stamina and character in the apprentice and strengthens his or her notions of teamwork, ambition, discipline and perseverance.

For the Class of 2010 we offer the following disciplines:
  • Food & Beverage Service
  • Food & Beverage Preparation
  • PADI Divemaster
  • Safe Maritime Transport
Admission

For certain disciplines, personal tools will be provided to the Apprentices and deducted from the training allowance over the period of the course.

Room & Board
Apprentices are provided with room & board, laundry facilities as well as access to staff facilities at the resorts.

Insurance

Uniforms are provided by Four Seasons Resorts Maldives. Apprentices are expected to be perfectly groomed at all times.

House rules and discipline

Cover Letters and Customized Resumes

...

..

.

Your cover letter and your resume are the tools that you need to land the job you always wanted, but this means they have to be just right. They have to stand out from the crowd. Unfortunately, many individuals have a difficult time constructing a cover letter and a resume that accurately depicts them. The good news, however, is that there are professional services that can help you out with this so that you can be adequately portrayed on paper.

How does it work?

When using professional services to construct your cover letters and resumes, it is a rather simple process. All you need to do at first is provide the company with information about yourself. This information will include:

Your name and contact information
The goal you hope to accomplish by getting the job
Your employment history
Your educational background
Any certifications, licenses, or publications you may have
Volunteer experience
References
Any other viable information that may apply to your employment

Once they have all of this information together, they will be able to construct a very professional resume for you. It will be organized and the information will be relayed in a very professional manner that is straight to the point. You will not find any rambling on a resume or cover letter that is put together by professionals.

Because you may find these services on the Internet, they will most likely email you the finished product. Once you have the finished product on your computer, it is your responsibility to print it out. Make sure you do so on a high quality paper. You can purchase resume paper and letter stock through your local office supply store or department store in the office supplies section. It is important that your resume is made as professional as possible and the paper will help with this. It will feel good in the reader's hands.

The effectiveness of a good resume

The effectiveness of a good resume cannot be underestimated. Imagine that you are responsible for hiring for your employer. You are handed a stack of resumes. Some of them have handwritten cover letters, the resumes have no substance, the paper they are printed on are of a poor quality, and nothing stands out when you scan them. But you do come across one or two that are printed on high quality paper, have cover letters that get to the point, and certain parts stand out when being scanned through.

So think about which you are going to choose. Are you going to give the poorly put together resumes the time of day? Probably not. When you have to hire someone and you have to hire them quick, you don't want to have to sift through a bunch of resumes that look like they don't have good candidates behind them.

So make sure you put yourself in the shoes of the individual doing the hiring when it comes to your resume. If you're insecure about creating your resume, then perhaps you need to have a professional do it. It is much better to have a company do customized cover letters and resumes that you know will be effective instead of taking a chance. Being that the job market is the way it is now, it is not really the time to take a chance when the jobs are far and in between. When you have an effective resume, you are increasing your chances of getting the job. Those with great resumes are the ones that don't have much trouble getting jobs in even the most unpredictable of job markets.

Lilypad, a prototype of auto-sufficient amphibious city

.
.

LILYPAD, A FLOATING ECOPOLIS FOR CLIMATICAL REFUGEES 2100, a large crowd of ecological refugees

Further to the anthropogenic activity, the climate warms up and the ocean level increases. According to the principle of Archimedes and contrary to preconceived notions, the melting of the arctic ice-floe will not change the rising of the water exactly as an ice cube melting in a glass of water does not make its level rise. However, there are two huge ice reservoirs that are not on the water and whose melting will transfer their volume towards the oceans, leading to their rising. It deals with the ice caps of Antarctic and Greenland on the one hand, and the continental glaciers on the other hand. Another reason of the ocean rising, that does not have anything to do with the ice melting is the water dilatation under the effect of the temperature.

According to the less alarming forecasts of the GIEC (Intergovernmental group on the evolution of the climate), the ocean level should rise from 20 to 90 cm during the 21st Century with a status quo by 50 cm (versus 10 cm in the 20th Century). The international scientific scene assets that a temperature elevation of 1°C will lead to a water rising of 1 meter. This increase of 1 m would bring ground losses emerged of approximately 0.05% in Uruguay, 1% in Egypt, 6% in the Netherlands, 17.5% in Bangladesh and up to 80% approximately in the atoll Majuro in Oceania (Marshall and Kiribati islands and step by step the Maldives islands).

If the first meter is not very funny with more than 50 million of people affected in the developing countries, the situation is worse with the second one. Countries like Vietnam, Egypt, Bangladesh, Guyana or Bahamas will see their most inhabited places swamped at each flood and their most fertile fields devastated by the invasion of salt water damaging the local ecosystems. New York, Bombay, Calcutta, Hô Chi Minh City, Shanghai, Miami, Lagos, Abidjan, Djakarta, Alexandria… not les that 250 million of climatic refugees and 9% of the GDP threatened if we not build protections related to such a threat. It is the demonstration inflicted to reluctant spirits by a climatological study of the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) and that challenges our imagination of eco-conception!

The water rising being not written in the agenda of the Grenelle agreements on environment in France, it is primordial in terms of environmental crisis and climatic exodus to pass from now on from a strategy of reaction in emergency to a strategy of a adaptation and long-lasting anticipation. It is surprising, whereas some islands prepare their disappearing to see that the management of the rising of the ocean level does not seem to worry the governments beyond measure. More surprising to see that the populations of the developed countries continue to rush on the littoral to build districts over there; houses and buildings dedicated to a certain flood

Lilypad, a prototype of auto-sufficient amphibious city

Whereas the Netherlands and the United Arabic Emirates « fatten » their beach with billion of euros to build their short-living polders and their protective dams for a decade, the project «Lilypad» deals with a tenable solution to the water rising! Actually, facing the worldwide ecological crisis, this floating Ecopolis has the double objective not only to widen sustainabely in offshore the territories of the most developed countries such as the Monaco principality but above all to grant the housing of future climatic refugees of he next submerged ultra-marine territories such as the Polynesian atolls. New biotechnological prototype of ecologic resilience dedicated to the nomadism and the urban ecology in the sea, Lilypad travels on the water line of the oceans, from the equator to the poles following the marine streams warm ascending of the Gulf Stream or cold descending of the Labrador.

It is a true amphibian half aquatic and half terrestrial city, able to accommodate 50,000 inhabitants and inviting the biodiversity to develop its fauna and flora around a central lagoon of soft water collecting and purifying the rain waters. This artificial lagoon is entirely immersed ballasting thus the city. It enables to live in the heart of the subaquatic depths. The multifunctional programming is based on three marinas and three mountains dedicated respectively to the work, the shops and the entertainments. The whole set is covered by a stratum of planted housing in suspended gardens and crossed by a network of streets and alleyways with organic outline. The goal is to create a harmonious coexistence of the couple Human / Nature and to explore new modes of living the sea by building with fluidity collective spaces in proximity, overwhelming spaces of social inclusion suitable to the meeting of all the inhabitants – denizen or foreign-born, recent or old, young or aged people.

The floating structure in « branches » of the Ecopolis is directly inspired of the highly ribbed leave of the great lilypad of Amazonia Victoria Regia increased 250 times. Coming from the family of Nympheas, this aquatic plant with exceptional plasticity was discovered by the German botanist Thaddeaus Haenke and dedicated to the Queen Victoria of England in the 19th Century. The double skin is made of polyester fibres covered by a layer of titanium dioxide (TiO2) like an anatase which by reacting to the ultraviolet rays enable to absorb the atmospheric pollution by photocatalytic effect. Entirely autosufficient, Lilypad takes up the four main challenges launched by the OECD in March 2008: climate, biodiversity, water and health. It reached a positive energetic balance with zero carbone emission by the integration of all the renewable energies (solar, thermal and photovoltaic energies, wind energy, hydraulic, tidal power station, osmotic energies, phytopurification, biomass) producing thus durably more energy that it consumes! True biotope entirely recyclable, this floating Ecopolis tends thus towards the positive eco-accountancy of the building in the oceanic ecosystems by producing and softening itself the oxygen and the electricity, by recycling the CO2 and the waste, by purifying and softening biologically the used waters and by integrating ecological niches, aquaculture fields and biotic corridors on and under its body to meet its own food needs.

To reply to the mutation of the migratory flows coming from the hydroclimatic factors, Lilypad join thus on the mode of anticipation particular to the Jules Verne’s literature, the alternative possibility of a multicultural floating Ecopolis whose metabolism would be in perfect symbiosis with the cycles of the nature. It will be one of the major challenges of the 21st Century to create an international convention inventing new special means to accommodate the environmental migrants by recognizing their rights and obligations. Political and social challenge, the urban sustainable development must more than ever enter in resonance worldly with the human sustainable development!

A Short Guide To MCSE Training Courses

.

.

Training within IT is not as straight forward as one may think. Many who have studied for a degree in Computer Science or Computing will know that completing a degree is not enough. Some have had follow up in further studies or training, such as CISCO, Web Designing, MCAD, MCTS, MCSA, MCITP or MCSE training. At this point the reader must be thinking those are many letters and what do they all mean? This is the problem for many IT graduates as they have trouble deciding on what to do with their degree.

The key is to research different avenues and career paths, find out what you need to do to get to the level you want and how long it will take you to get there. Each course you take will give you an in depth knowledge of that position with possible contacts and work experience. The other side to this is that you will not be paid to do this, so it is always a good idea to save some money beforehand or take up another job whilst training.

Amongst the most reputable and popular courses is the MCSE training (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer). This consists of seven MCP (Microsoft Certified Professional) modules, which all amount to one MSCE qualification. The course is Microsoft certified and most people who have completed this training often find themselves employed with most IT companies that use Microsoft for networking day-to-day operating systems.

The MCSE training includes learning specific Microsoft products, general networking, network security, Active directory, computer networking infrastructure, Microsoft Exchange server and Microsoft SQL server. There are seven exams, passing all of them will guarantee in you obtaining a qualification. MCSE courses are also available for XP and Vista users, as well as previous operating systems such as Windows ME or 2000.

This course is useful for analysing the business uses of information systems, major companies and businesses value the skills of an MCSE professional due to their ability to design and implement the infrastructure. This role is more demanding and highly competitive, offering many qualified candidates an attractive salary and more scope to work their way up the ladder quickly.

The MCSA training is another popular course and is often mistaken for the MCSE training course. This training allows the candidate to train as a systems administrator on Microsoft Operating systems. This is much simpler than the MCSE and only requires passing three core exams and one elective exam. This however, offers positions in specific roles and is a stepping-stone towards Other IT qualification.

Many businesses use CISCO programme to help run the network infrastructure of their IT systems. This is another popular programme, which is not Microsoft certified but is CISCO UK certified training. Training for this course will enable you to learn how to run and ensure safe secure connectivity between employees and clients. This is a widely recognised course; people looking to study this course will face detailed study of numerous modules and undergo intense examination.

Persons opting for a career in IT will need to be specific in what field they intend to enter into as it is not as straight forward as one would think. Like many other qualifications, you as the individual must take time to prepare, stay patient and focus on your ultimate goal. Find out what interests you the most and think about how you can develop this interest into a full-time career.

Maldives to become premiere eco-destination

MinivanNews.com

.

Planting trees, installing solar power panels and wind turbines are just some of the ways resorts will have to adapt in order to step in line with President Mohamed Nasheed’s new green agenda.

The president boldly declared yesterday the Maldives would achieve carbon neutrality in ten years through a system of offsetting carbon emissions and using renewable energies.

The impact on the tourism industry, which accounts for a third of the country’s income, will undoubtedly be great. The mental picture conjured up by Nasheed during his announcement was one of tourists sunning themselves in carbon neutral resorts and dining on fish caught by fishermen sailing the seas on carbon neutral boats.

With the government giving the green light to maximise efforts to transform the country into the world’s premier eco-destination, resorts will have to adopt sustainable policies alongside the provision of luxury if they are to stay in the game.

One resort, Soneva Fushi, is already way ahead. In 2007, the resort decided to go carbon neutral by 2009 and has been seeking out the most innovative technologies - including electricity-free air conditioning, which uses deep sea cold water - ever since.

The resort’s owners aim to reach 60 per cent carbon neutrality by the end of the year, become carbon zero by 2010 and carbon negative by the end of 2010.

“The Maldivian islands are our main selling point,” said Musab Anees, social and environment manager at the resort. “But they are fragile and so we have a great responsibility.”

Anees predicts the tourism industry will have little choice but to adapt if resorts are to continue drawing tourists to the Maldives as the current trend in Europe is “very eco-conscious”. “In our experience, the more sustainable we are, the more loyal our clients are.”

Taking a tough line on sustainability, Soneva Fushi even levies a two per cent carbon tax on clients’ bills to offset their flights and their stay. “We haven’t seen a dip in numbers. On the contrary,” said Anees, “our numbers have gone up.”

Tourism minister Dr Ahmed Ali Sawad said adapting to market needs would not prove overly taxing for the tourism industry, which was “very responsive”. Adding a cautionary note, he said it was important to remember the goals set by the government would not be achieved overnight.

With the global trend veering towards eco-tourism, those in the industry predict the president’s green agenda could boost much-needed tourist numbers. A welcome thought at a time of financial hardship, reflected in the 4.8 per cent drop in tourist arrivals in January compared to the same time last year.

Jemma Purvis, public relations assistant at Kuoni, a tour operator which specialises in luxury holidays to the Maldives, said the company was making a greater move towards socially-responsible travel. “Conspicuous consumerism in the current climate is not considered appropriate and people are actively looking to holiday with a socially-responsible tour operator.”

The president’s decision has been described as “novel” by Mohamed Sim Ibrahim, director general of Maldives Association Tourism Industry. “I think it’s very good news to come out at this time. It’s something very positive especially at a time when people are very worried about the environment....It’s very visionary.”

The Sweet Success Of Team Building

.

.

Successful team building is a delicate balancing act between organizational psychology and fun, and if it's done correctly, those that are taking part will only be aware of the fun. The purpose of these group development days out is to identify and overcome areas within team work that are not conducive to achieving a shared goal. In the workplace, even if it appears that we are working independently, we are in fact interacting with many people. It is essential that everyone within the same working environment has an ability to understand and respect fellow workers, and cooperate for a common good; but how exactly can tasks in team building events be transferred back into the workplace.

It seems implausible to anyone other than a psychologist that a day spent playing The Generation Game or a city-sized version of Monopoly can improve the everyday working environment for a group of employees. Running around and having fun, talking to people you usually barely blink at whilst passing the photocopier and having conversations that don't involve the topic of who had the stapler last can be a liberating process, and it can certainly help bring co-workers together on a more social level. The magic is not in social networking though, although obviously being able to speak to Brenda about something other than printer cartridges is a plus point.

The magic that is hidden within team building exercises is the ability of the event organizer to disguise personal development as a day of fun. By constructing games and activities to force colleagues to cooperate on a new level, weaknesses can be identified and overcome in a way that is so subtle that the participants barely notice. This not only benefits and enlightens the people involved in the team building event, it gives the people running the company a chance to see the way that the staff really interact with each other. This process can open up a whole new perspective on the dynamics at play within the working environment.

After the event, there is inevitably a shift in perspective and a change in the working environment. The purpose of the team development day was to identify weaknesses and strengths that are inherent within a working group or individuals and make adjustments accordingly. This can lead to changes in the working environment to reflect strong working groups, often incorporating the hidden skills of certain individuals whose talents and strengths were being overlooked in the daily routine. The tasks in team building focus on communication, organization, self and team management as well as problem solving.

Although these skill sets seem obvious, the way they are presented to those involved makes them seem like a normal part of everyday activity, which to all intents and purposes it is, but in a development task, they are refined to bring about certain outcomes. If negative consequences arise, ones not conducive to a collective working environment, then the event organizers have the skills to change certain behaviors and ways of thinking through task development, or suggest counter measures to mitigate the undesirable behavior or action. The results are always positive and constructive, producing a team that is strengthened and cohesive. Team building can be compared to a sugar coated pill; it does its job without leaving a bitter taste in the mouth.
