Ever had a new job just sort of fall into your lap?
I'll bet it's happened at least once to you or someone you know
Perhaps you got a phone call from an old friend who referred you to a hiring manager. Or an email from a relative urging you to apply at their company.
Wouldn't it be nice if there were a way to "attract" more job opportunities like this?
Well, I believe there is
I believe that job search "luck" can be created, based on my 11 years of helping and observing thousands of job seekers. And plenty of others agree, including Lynn Ahearn, a Certified Law of Attraction Practitioner and Founder of Life Success Coaching (www.lifesuccesscoaching.net).
Ahearn tells the story of one client who quickly "attracted" her dream job as a result of taking the right action
"During our conversations, she remembered an old passion for undersea adventure -- something she had forgotten about for years," recalls Ahearn. Her client did some research, and found the name of a renowned author who was doing work that really resonated with her. She sent him an email and, about 45 days later, was hired as his assistant.
According to Ahearn, there are three steps to take if you want to experience the same sort of "magnetic job search." Here they are ...
"First, get clear about the job you want. This can be difficult for many people, who do not truly know what they want to do," says Ahearn, who believes it's often easier to describe what you hate about work. So she asks people to list the things they don't want, then she takes them in the opposite direction to write down a description of their ideal job.
"Second, you must get in vibrational alignment with your target job," says Ahearn.
This is related to the idea that success breeds success. By thinking and feeling more like you already have the job you want, opportunities will start to appear, almost as if by magic. I've seen it happen too many times to discount the idea.
Example: One of my clients, Jaime, a project manager from St. Peter, Minnesota, had not one or two but four different job opportunities to choose from. The positions were all attractive (from $70,000 to $90,000 in salary) and he interviewed at least twice with each company. One success led to another in his job search.
Or Marc, a computer technician client of mine from Bartlett, Illinois. He writes: "I accepted a position today. It's actually amusing because now that I got this, other offers are rolling in. A company I interviewed at two months ago called me back with another position. I already accepted the other job, so I had to decline."
What if you don't have any job interviews on the horizon? One way to get into alignment and create an attractive, internal feeling of success is by re-reading the description of your ideal job, until you get really excited about it. "Know that this job is a perfect match and that it is on its way to you," Ahearn suggests.
The third step is to be open to receiving the job you want. "While you're taking inspired action, listen to your intuition and be open to opportunities," says Ahearn. As long as you are absolutely clear about your target job and are taking at least one step each day toward it, you'll get there following this advice.
The key phrase here is: "Listen to your intuition and be open to opportunities."
I like to think of intuition as your subconscious mind's way of trying to tell you something. When you act on hunches -- sending an email to an industry expert you've always wanted to meet, or turning a polite elevator conversation into a job lead, for example -- you'll get more of them. Because you tend to get more of what you reinforce.
Also, it helps to relax and avoid trying to push too hard toward your next job. Easier said than done, right? Especially if you have bills to pay.
But picture this: If someone offered you a $100 bill, would you reach for it with a clenched fist? Of course not. You can't grab money -- or anything -- with a fist. You have to relax and open your hand before you can receive.
It's the same with your job search. If you're a walking, talking, clenched-up ball of stress, fewer people are going to want to be around you, which will hinder your networking. And employers will sense your anxiety in an interview, which makes you a less-attractive candidate. So try to relax and defuse physical tension with regular exercise, plenty of sleep and a healthy diet.
By giving this three-step method a try -- becoming clear about the position you want, getting in "vibrational alignment" with that job, and being open to receiving it -- you may find that your dream job is attracted to you magnetically and almost effortlessly.

Your positive attitude in the workplace determines how far you can go in your career. Have you thought about what are some of your positive attitudes in the workplace? Spend some time thinking about your work attitude if you are a newbie seeking career success.
Throughout my career I have had the privilege to work under some of the best people in my industry. Coupled with the numerous self-improvement books I read, one day I found myself asking, “How would I define my attitude in the workplace that will propel my career success?” Specifically, what would be my positive attitudes at work?
I nailed them down into 3 words that would be my positive attitudes in the workplace. These were Pride, Passion and Belief.
However, as the years went by I realized that they are only part of the equation. To balance these attitudes there were another side. I was still a newbie seeking career success when I held these to be my guiding principles.
The other side of the equation was Skills/Knowledge, Direction and Action. These together with Pride, Passion and Belief became what I practiced as my positive attitude in the workplace. I believe these to be relevant for newbie seeking career success now, too. It is relevant to be used as anyone’s work attitude for positive results.
1. Pride and Skills/Knowledge
Pride in my personal definition as a positive attitude in the workplace is taken to mean self-dignity. It means the realization that everything you do has your personal signature on it. When you realize this, you give everything assigned to you your best shot.
However, there is a danger here. That danger is excessive pride without the necessary skills and knowledge is arrogance.
So, Pride – Skills/Knowledge = Arrogance
This equation of positive attitude in the workplace has to go hand in hand. It has to be in good balance. What about doing your work with just skills and knowledge and with no pride? Well, you end up with mediocre work. You get it right but it wouldn’t be the best. Is this your attitude in the workplace?
Hence, Skills/Knowledge – Pride = Mediocre Work
When you add this set of positive attitudes in the workplace together, pride and skills/knowledge – what do you get?
Pride + Skills/Knowledge = The Best Work Each Time
2. Passion and Direction
Passion as a positive attitude in the workplace is the burning desire and love for the work that you do, which will pull you through the tough times. It is an intense enthusiasm that all things worth doing are worth doing well.
However, like the previous set of positive attitudes in the workplace it needs to be balanced by another factor - Direction. Your enthusiasm and burning desire must be harnessed to focus on the objectives at hand for it to show positive results. Passion without direction would just mean wasted energy.
Passion – Direction = Wasted Energy
What about Direction without Passion? Well, what if you know where you want to go but do not have the fuel for it? It just means success takes longer to achieve, if ever.
Direction – Passion = Success Takes Far Longer, If Ever
When you add direction and passion as positive attitude in the workplace you get goals galore!
Passion + Direction = Goals Galore
3. Belief and Action
My last equation of positive attitude in the workplace involves belief and action. The more your personal belief is aligned to the organization you are attached to the better your chances for career success. A deep believe in yourself will create the vigor and force that fuels your journey of seeking career success.
This belief must be balanced with action. Action means making your plans work. It means doing. Working. A believe that is not backed by a plan of action is just fantasies.
Belief – Action = Fantasies
What if you work your plans without a belief? Anyone without believe in themselves and their dreams but continue to work their plans is a fool at work.
Action – Belief = Fool at Work
When you are able to synergize believe and action into one, your dreams come true!
Belief + Action = Dreams Come True
Positive Attitude in the Workplace
When you are able to harness the equation these 3 sets of positive attitude in the workplace into one – reaching for the star becomes a reality. In fact, as a newbie seeking career success – when you internalize this positive attitude in the workplace into your work attitude YOU ARE A STAR!

Should you even change jobs, when you catch yourself saying, “I hate my job”? Frankly, I do not have the answer, but what I will attempt to do here is to show you that the path to changing jobs is not a linear one. Finding that answer is a painful path because of the uncertainty that it takes you. Having quit from my job twice to dabble in two very different fields has taught me that there are no clear one-stop answers.
People tend to think that when they start thinking ‘I hate my job’, that’s when they should quit. Perhaps so, but more often than not they find themselves back in the loop that they wanted to get out from in the first place. Learning what you want to do is like finding ourselves. It is a tough journey and one that we may not even have an ‘actual’ answer for this lifetime.
No Overnight Solution
There are no overnight solutions to the challenge of ‘I hate my job’. To change your job and to find one that you truly like takes time. And time means patience. There are two routes that you can take; one that is commonly practiced, which is to find out what you really want then, and quit your current job. But of course, I have also seen people who quit their current job then find another one that they like.
Both have worked for different people. The only problem is for you to think which one suits you best. The latter provides for a lot of uncertainties. And if you have the financial capabilities and is willing to sacrifice your savings in order to get the ideal job then you are maybe more ready than others.
The challenge is this, sometimes even after finding what is deemed the ideal job it still does not satisfy you. What do you do then? Well, do not let the experience go to waste. Which is why finding that elusive dream job takes time, patience and hard work. Each job that you move to teaches you something about yourself. You need to be sure you are able to pin point what it is that teaches you about yourself and your view about work. That way, each time you say, “I hate my job” and quit it helps you progress closer to your goal.
Time
Changing jobs takes a lot of sacrifice especially when you quit without knowing what you want to do next. Money is definitely one of them, and then time in order to find another job. Assuming you find a job fairly quickly, you need to think about the time needed to start all over again with the new company. There will also be uncertainties you need to grapple with from the moment you put in your resignation letter till you have settled into your new job.
Patience
It takes a lot of patience not knowing when you will get a job, and in the longer term what you want to do with your life. There is also a lot of patience involved in experimenting with different jobs trying to find your ‘true’ self. I used ‘true’ in quotes because the working self that you know is obviously a facet of what you are and not the actual total self. Hence, this journey of self-discovery will take a lot of patience. It is not going to be easy and there are no straight answers any career gurus can point you towards.
Hard Work
Changing jobs is hard work. Changing jobs in order to find what you love is even harder work. So, let no one tell you once you have quit and changed jobs you will find nirvana to your career success. There are no such easy answers neither for newbies at work nor veterans. The experiments of doing work either on the side after your full time job, during weekends to try out if you like certain jobs or quitting outright to experiment will take a lot of work. It will also take a lot of hard work to figure out what really suits you and what it is that you are pursing with your new career.
Humble Enough?
Perhaps you should also start thinking if you have tried hard enough at your current job before you say, “I hate my job”. It is far too easy to say that and blame others. It is far too easy to give up than to say, “I will find other ways to make this work.” Self-discovery takes time and with work is the same. It takes time. Have you taken enough time to understand the work you are currently doing? Time and effort to understand the people you are currently working with?
Please do not think that the perfect career is around the corner. People who found happiness and satisfaction from their work took years to find it. More importantly, there aren’t jobs in this world that pays a lot for little sacrifice whether in terms of time or effort. If there are, they are usually known as get rich quick schemes
So, before you say, “I hate my job” one more time – perhaps you should understand your role at work and know the role of work in your life. More importantly, make sure you accomplish something daily at work and then see of you go home more fulfilled and satisfied.
