You have to feel for IT job seekers. It is tough for them to find solid IT focused resume writers. It is tough for them to find recruiters who truly understand the nuances of their field. And it is tough for them to get around HR personnel who also don’t necessarily know more than to look for a bunch of buzzwords.
The same frustrations can really be said for engineers and others in highly technical fields.
I have had the pleasure of working with these types of job seekers, particularly in crafting resumes for them, and although I am not a techie nor an engineer, I now share their frustrations.
It is definitely true that these types of fields are complex and that there is a lot of jargon out there, but quite honestly, it doesn’t take much effort to get yourself at least acquainted with the basics. You should be able to discern the difference between a systems administrator position and the types of skills and technical proficiencies that an employer is looking for versus a programmer position. Although some of the same terms may be thrown around, their level of importance varies.
And in IT, it isn’t just what you know, but how you have used that knowledge that can make all the difference. So hearing that someone has JAVA experience, for example, is great, but in what context has he or she used it?
I’m not sure why technical job seekers get left behind by so many career services professionals. There certainly are enough IT candidates out there to work with. Maybe it is just our unwillingness to invest the time to familiarize ourselves with the basics. Maybe we feel that we would have to become techies ourselves in order to assist them properly. I’m not really sure what it is, but there are without a doubt, very few firms that work well with IT and engineering professionals.
The job search process is difficult enough, no matter what field you are in. But add to that, ignorance of the industry all together, and you have disaster.
On the resume side, in particular, I have seen everything from resumes that are poorly laid out and lack a proper strategy for the IT niche of the candidate to resumes that are so long and drawn out and full of every technical detail known to man that no one in their right mind would ever want to read it, even if they understood it all.
My advice for IT and engineering professionals is to do their homework. Find writers and recruiters who at the very least can grasp some of the nuances of your profession and “talk the talk” so to speak. I don’t think it is essential that they know all the ins and outs, but they must at least know the difference in marketing an IT project manager versus a business analyst and how the structures of those roles differ.
Without taking the time to find the right people to work with, IT job seekers will only be disappointed.

Job cuts hit Pizza Hut headquarters
A spokesman for Pizza Hut said staff members at the company’s Dallas headquarters will be notified of the cuts Wednesday. The company didn't specify how many positions will be impacted.
Pizza Hut confirmed the news after Jerry Abramson, Mayor of Louisville, Kentucky, confirmed that Yum Brands Inc. will be cutting or relocating “several hundred” white-collar jobs from its Louisville headquarters and moving other jobs to restaurant chain headquarters cities. Officials with Yum Brands (NYSE: YUM) could not immediately be reached for comment. Pizza Hut's chain headquarters is located in Dallas. Taco Bell's headquarters is located in Irvine, Calif. The KFC, A&W and Long John Silver's restaurant chains are located in Louisville.
Yum Brands will cut several hundred jobs at Pizza Hut in Dallas, at its Taco Bell headquarters in Irvine, Calif., and at the company’s headquarters in Louisville, Ky.
Yum’s Brands also has the KFC, Long John Silver’s and A&W All-American Food brands under its umbrella.

LONDON: If you’re a doctor, a teacher or a nurse and wish to migrate to Britain, forget about it.
These are among the thousands of jobs which will be off-limits for skilled workers from outside the European Union under the points-based immigration system to come into force later this month.
The Home Office on Wednesday said there would be 2,00,000 fewer jobs available to non-EU migrants than the original estimate
“The number of positions available to migrants has been reduced from one million to just under 8,00,000, ensuring that only those foreign workers we need — and no more — can come here,” it said.
The system is designed to give preference to native Britons and offer only those jobs to foreigners that cannot be filled locally. As Britain cannot bar EU citizens from coming here and working, the rules will affect only workers from outside the EU.
New rules will require employers, wishing to bring in foreign workers, to show that suitable local candidates are not available. They will have to advertise jobs and only when they are not able to fill them locally would they be allowed to recruit foreign workers
“Tier 2 of the points system will ensure that British jobseekers get the first shot at jobs and only those foreign workers we need will be able to come to the United Kingdom,” said the Home Office statement
Border and Immigration Minister Phil Woolas said the system — aimed at cutting down immigration — was flexible enough to allow the government to raise or lower the bar according to the needs of local businesses.
“Had the points system been in place last year there would have been 12 per cent fewer people coming in to work through the equivalent work permit route. On top of this, the strict new shortage list means 2,00,000 fewer jobs are available via the shortage occupation route,” he said.
Besides a range of other restrictions, foreign workers will be required to have English language skills and enough funds to support themselves in the first month of their stay in Britain.

Phone Interviewing Tips

Here are the keys to successful phone interviewing. Follow these simple rules and you should achieve success in this important phase of job-hunting.
Do give accurate and detailed contact information in your cover letter so your interviewers can easily connect with you.
When in job-hunting mode, don't have a disproportionately silly or long greeting on your answering machine or voicemail.
Do ensure that household members understand the importance of phone messages in your job search
Do know what job you are interviewing for
Do practice, if possible. Have a friend call you to do a mock phone interview so you get the feel of being interviewed over the phone
When being interviewed by phone, do make sure you are in a place where you can read notes, take notes, and concentrate
If you cannot devote enough time to a phone interview, do suggest a specific alternate time to the recruiter. It's often best to be the one who calls back so you can be mentally prepared.
Do consider using a phone interview log
Do consider keeping some notecards or an outline in front of you to remind yourself of key points you want to cover with the interviewer. You don't want your responses to sound scripted, but you don't want to fumble for important points either. Do also have your resume in front of you so you can remember highlights of your experience and accomplishments.
Do ensure that you can hear and are being clearly heard
Do consider standing when being interviewed on the phone. Some experts say you'll sound more professional than if you're slouching in an easy chair.
Do consider dressing nicely for the phone interview. It may sound silly since the interviewer can't see you, but you really will project a more professional image if you're dressed for the part instead of wearing, for example, a ratty bathrobe.
Don't feel you have to fill in the silences. If you've completed a response, but the interviewer hasn't asked his or her next question, don't start babbling just to fill in airtime. Instead, ask a question of your own related to your last response.
Do create a strong finish to your phone interview with thoughtful questions
Don't panic if you have special needs. If you are hearing-impaired, for example, phone interviews are still possible.
Don't snuffle, sneeze or cough. If you can't avoid these behaviors, say “excuse me.”

No change in plans for Hankede City Hotel - Ministry
There is no change in the government plans to develop a city hotel in Hankede of Addu atoll, according Tourism Ministry
Ministry said government gives top priority to develop a city hotel in Hankede as such an undertaking has a direct bearing on the island’s economic development and people’s prosperity.
Ministry further informed that the hotel development will be put up for tender soon and that the construction is hoped to commence after bidding process is completed.
The agreement made between Thoodu Pvt Ltd and the Ministry for the development of a City Hotel in Hankede was cancelled. Ministry said the agreement was cancelled as the government no longer believed that the Thoodu Pvt. Ltd was capable of undertaking such a project.
