The Sweet Success Of Team Building

.

.

Successful team building is a delicate balancing act between organizational psychology and fun, and if it's done correctly, those that are taking part will only be aware of the fun. The purpose of these group development days out is to identify and overcome areas within team work that are not conducive to achieving a shared goal. In the workplace, even if it appears that we are working independently, we are in fact interacting with many people. It is essential that everyone within the same working environment has an ability to understand and respect fellow workers, and cooperate for a common good; but how exactly can tasks in team building events be transferred back into the workplace.

It seems implausible to anyone other than a psychologist that a day spent playing The Generation Game or a city-sized version of Monopoly can improve the everyday working environment for a group of employees. Running around and having fun, talking to people you usually barely blink at whilst passing the photocopier and having conversations that don't involve the topic of who had the stapler last can be a liberating process, and it can certainly help bring co-workers together on a more social level. The magic is not in social networking though, although obviously being able to speak to Brenda about something other than printer cartridges is a plus point.

The magic that is hidden within team building exercises is the ability of the event organizer to disguise personal development as a day of fun. By constructing games and activities to force colleagues to cooperate on a new level, weaknesses can be identified and overcome in a way that is so subtle that the participants barely notice. This not only benefits and enlightens the people involved in the team building event, it gives the people running the company a chance to see the way that the staff really interact with each other. This process can open up a whole new perspective on the dynamics at play within the working environment.

After the event, there is inevitably a shift in perspective and a change in the working environment. The purpose of the team development day was to identify weaknesses and strengths that are inherent within a working group or individuals and make adjustments accordingly. This can lead to changes in the working environment to reflect strong working groups, often incorporating the hidden skills of certain individuals whose talents and strengths were being overlooked in the daily routine. The tasks in team building focus on communication, organization, self and team management as well as problem solving.

Although these skill sets seem obvious, the way they are presented to those involved makes them seem like a normal part of everyday activity, which to all intents and purposes it is, but in a development task, they are refined to bring about certain outcomes. If negative consequences arise, ones not conducive to a collective working environment, then the event organizers have the skills to change certain behaviors and ways of thinking through task development, or suggest counter measures to mitigate the undesirable behavior or action. The results are always positive and constructive, producing a team that is strengthened and cohesive. Team building can be compared to a sugar coated pill; it does its job without leaving a bitter taste in the mouth.

How to Find a Job in 2009

.

.

If you had to find a new job tomorrow, where would you look? Maybe you are looking right now for a new job or a better job. With the current state of the economy, finding a new job has become increasingly challenging. While the recent economic down turn has affected nearly everyone, there are a few select industries that have been especially hard hit. This has created a great number of workers who are seeking new opportunities. The resulting challenges are where do you start looking for that new job and how do you rise above the crowd.

Fortunately, new resources have been created to aid these efforts. In the old days, if you were looking for a new job you would simply open the newspaper and check the classified ads. While the local newspaper may still be a viable option, the digital age has presented us with new ways to access information more quickly. A myriad of internet websites that now specialize in providing immediate access to the most current of information for both employers and job seekers.

Would you like to post your resume for thousands of potential employers to view? How about searching tens of thousands of open positions for which you can apply online. Technology now provides us with them distinct advantages that were not part of our everyday lives ten years ago.

These resources do, however, vary to some degree in their focus and what they offer. Some job websites are designed for national exposure and use by job hunters all across the country. Other sites may also integrate local events designed to bring together employers and potential employees. These events often draw tens of thousands of people to meet and greet companies with open positions looking for new talent.

Other online job resources focus on local markets specifically. Try using an internet search engine to look for jobs in your city to find localized resources. Some states and counties also offer job placement assistance programs. These groups provide facilities with specialists who can help with resume development, organize job fairs with both large and small local employers, and help job seekers to sharpen their job interview skills.

The truth of the matter is that with so many individuals looking for new opportunities, all of these resources should be used in order to maximize your chance for success at finding that new job.

Start by evaluating your education, skills, and experience, and make a list of all potential careers and industries that you may be qualified for. Next, get that resume ready. If it has been a while since you updated your resume or had to put one together, do not be afraid to ask for help. Some of the online job sites offer automated resume development guides. You may also take a few minutes to stop by your local job development office for additional guidance and assistance.

Now it is time to start letting the world know you are out there. Get in touch with employers that may fit your needs and those who are a good match for your set of qualifications. A little bit of luck and timing will not hurt either, but it will be hard work and due diligence that will ultimately lead you to success.

Secrets of Effective Time Management

.
.
Life today is much more fast-paced and hectic than it was just a few decades ago. It seems that there is always too much to do and not enough time to do it.
The secret to being a success and having the time to do what you enjoy doing is effective time management.

There are several methods that you can utilize to save time and energy at home and at the work place. The first thing you need to do is to examine your daily schedule. Begin by organizing and prioritizing the various tasks you perform every day. Decide what absolutely needs to be done to accomplish your goals. Then evaluate the remaining tasks and eliminate the unnecessary ones. You may be surprised at the amount of time you spend every day completing tasks that you really don't need to do.

Once you have reorganized your schedule, you may find that you still have too many tasks to complete. You may want to delegate some of these responsibilities to another person. This is difficult for many people to do. They feel insecure letting someone else complete their tasks. They may feel that they are the only ones who complete the job correctly. You need to trust in your own judgment and chose an assistant who has the right qualifications. Train the person properly and give him detailed explanations of how he should proceed. Remain friendly and approachable so that he will feel comfortable coming to you when a problem arises. You should also make yourself readily available.

If a problem arises and he can not find you, the assistant may try to solve the problem himself. For the first few weeks, check on him regularly until you feel that he is knowledgeable enough to work on his own. Within a short period of time, you may come to realize that you have obtained an indispensable assistant that can readily step into your shoes if need be.

Another way to effectively manage your time is to do one-stop shopping. When having to travel to different areas of the company to complete certain tasks, organize your work so that you can complete your work in that specific area at one time. For example, most companies keep their copying machines at a central location in the building. When going to make copies, gather everything that you need to copy for that day and complete it all in one trip. This is much more time efficient than making ten trips a day.

You should try to organize your work in a way that works best for you. Some people have to have a neat work area, while others cannot find anything if someone straightens up their desk. If you can work efficiently in a timely matter, either way is all right. Some people have an easier time dealing with a numerical system of filing rather than the traditional alphabetical. If this is the case, change it to the one that you prefer. You may want to ask some of your colleagues if they have any ideas to save more time. They may use methods that you had never thought of.

Many companies offer time management strategies. You should be willing to try some of these, and may even suggest a few of your own. No one knows the aspects of your job better than you. Only you can judge what methods of time management work best in your situation

Team Building Psychology In The Workplace

.

.

Job satisfaction is an important part of a person's employment, being able to feel worthwhile, worthy, part of a team and having a feeling of achievement within the working environment are essential elements to happiness. These feelings can motivate a workforce and ensure they are at their most productive, and in turn, this attitude will motivate their colleagues. Through a series of simple exercises from team building psychology, it is possible to motivate yourself, your staff and inspire others.

Team building is part of a psychology discipline called organisational psychology. It is used to inspire groups of workers through a series of well planned events that are fun and motivational. Through these types of events, a worker can have a greater sense of job enrichment, and as their confidence grows, the more responsibilities can be taken on. This is a circle of reward, with positive feedback following positive action; a far more efficient way to have efficient workers.

Companies such as Google work on this premise that happy staff are productive staff. The job becomes more like a lifestyle, and after all, we spend the majority of our waking lives with the people we work with. Being able to get along and feel part of a team is just as important as feeling like part of a family. The offices at Google are famous for having a laid back atmosphere and encouraging staff to work on their own personal projects. Through doing this, the company believes that it will be rewarded with loyal and hard working individuals. By supplying extracurricular activities and allowing freedom of movement and choice, the worker feels in charge, in control and is more able to be productive.

These are the same principles that are used in team building psychology and they can be put in place in any workplace. Although the search engine giant has more resources at its disposal, and is able to provide tai chi and yoga classes throughout the day to help alleviate stress and encourage exercise; smaller companies are able to emulate this on a smaller budget, as it is the principle behind these activities, not the activities themselves.

By encouraging staff to exchange roles in the workplace or by having time where colleagues show each other what it is they do, each person will be aware of their role as part of a bigger picture. By understanding that they are part of a process, and consequently understanding that they are important in the process, a sense of worth will lead to a desire to work towards a common cause. This manifests itself in more creative and more productive thinking and working.

Flexible working hours allow a worker to have a greater feeling of control over their lives. There is a productive increase in output from people who work flexi hours or job share. The ability to be in control of their lives gives a sense of success and achievement and boosts self esteem. Workers that are trapped in a strict time-watching policy in the workplace often have a feeling of being trapped, out of control and under pressure to perform to a click. By removing those stresses, the sense of freedom will ripple through a workforce, and before you know it, daily team building will be taking place without anyone even knowing it.

Information Technology in Hospitality Industry

.

.

Traditionally, hotels were largely dependent on cards and paperwork at the front desk to keep in touch with old and current customers. They were largely at the mercy of the desires of vacationers to arrive, and on their own efforts and staff to be ready for potential surges or long droughts of occupancy. Luckily, such inconvenience and old-fashioned methods are long since past, thanks to advances in information technology.

The first area in which information technology became important was in regards to billing. Old-fashioned paper-based book-keeping was time consuming and inefficient, and was not able to quickly tell a hotel owner what the situation of their hotel was. Luckily, advances in modern record keeping allow for a hotel owner to keep track of what they have on hand, how much of it they have, and how much it costs. Accounting is complicated, but advanced accounting software, especially that tailored to the unique needs of the hospitality industry, helps to enable hotel owners to make smart decisions. Services and products that are no longer used can be quickly cut off to save money, while those who show demand can be increased in quantity or modified so as to reduce the heavy usage.

Most hotels are familiar with booking rooms and reservations over the phone, but information technology has expanded well beyond that. Hotels can now work with various online travel companies and booking services to have their rooms booked online, with no need to employ expensive staff. This also allows a hotel to advertise their open rooms and special deals directly to persons who would be most likely to purchase them, instead of wasting lots of money advertising in an unfocused manner. High quality information technology thus allows for better arrangement and management of bookings in order to allow a hotel to better maximize occupancy, and to know in advance when large groups or lean times are approaching. This allows a hotel manager to make plans regarding temporary staff, good times to renovate or expand, or other concerns, because he/she can determine the state of their hotel currently and for the next few months with only a few clicks on the computer.

The advances in information technology extend well beyond booking, however. The internet is essential for vacationers who wish to contact those back home, and for those traveling on business to get in touch with the office. Therefore, wireless internet has become a very common and very useful service for hotels to provide. Many business minded persons even require that a hotel offer internet services so that they can keep working while on the road. Luckily, such services are easy to provide, as all that is required is a wireless router and various devices to ensure the entire hotel is filled with the network. Modern advances in wireless internet also allow for the wireless internet provided for hotel visitors to be used to network the hotel itself. Security cameras, door locks, and other devices essential to hotel security and safety can be wired into the network, so that staff are alerted whenever a door is propped open, a fire alarm goes off or suspicious activity occurs. Though the hotel guests are wholly unaware of it, this sort of added safety and security keeps them safe, and in the event of a problem they will most certainly appreciate the benefits of such a system.

As advanced as it is, information technology in the hospitality industry is still going forward. Intelligent booking systems enable rapid and efficient guest feedback, along with the ability to predict who is likely to use the hotel again and inform them via e-mail or text messages when good deals arrive. Hotels with room service or other guest services can offer their menus online, allowing for quick updates, high-quality photos, and other ways to allow guests to see and order services before they even arrive. There are also advances in terms of payroll and inventory which make information technology a valuable asset for saving money and maximizing profits. The unique nature of the hospitality industry makes it a great place for new and emerging information technology, and forward-thinking hotel owners and managers are always looking for smart equipment and software to invest in.

Accounting Terms, Profit & Loss

.

.

Different fields of accounting study and make use of some terms that are not easy to be understood by others.

If you happen to be an accounting student or a professional CPA, you know all the different terms that are used in accounting. One and perhaps the most popular term to the average person is profit & loss.

So, do you know what this term means? To begin with, you must determine what profit is and what it means. Profit can be net earnings or net income, either one. Businesses can sell services or products.

Profits will come from the sales of these services and products. If the cost of running the business is controlled, it can add up to profits.

Profits are also called ROI for some and return on investment for others. However, this term is often limited to securities like bonds or stocks.

But still, some companies use ROI to mean short or long term business outcomes. AS well the taxable income is another term for profit.

The profits & loss of a certain company or individual is determined by the finance professionals through accounting. They can determine what made the profits as well as the losses.

Accountants form some sort of business equation in order to justify the profits & losses of a business. In this manner, they can easily tell the net worth of a company.

It seems that by simply defining one accounting term, it eventually leads to defining other terms as well. Net worth is another term that is very difficult to understand.

It refers to the resulting amounts after deducting the liabilities or debt, long and short term of a company from the assets. Private companies refer to net worth as the owner equity.

Why the owner equity? Well, after deducting all the liabilities, what is left basically belongs to the owner. In the case of public companies, the profit of the business is returned as dividends to shareholders.

As you can see, before owner or shareholders of a company can take hold of the profits, all liabilities must be deducted first.

Every business attempts to get a good and positive figure because that means profit to them; if not, the business has a loss. Societies and economies are built on profit.

However, there are many times that businesses incurs losses. Consumer habits and purchasing trends change. Because of this fact, it is impossible to foresee the future of a company's performance at all times.

How do you determine if a business is at a loss? This is understandable and even those of us who have no background in accounting know what it means.

All liabilities will be taken from the assets and if this results in a negative amount, then the business has a loss.

The accountant staff of the company can pursue effective measures to bring the business back to a profitable situation.

If the business has efficient and effective accounting pros, the business can improve and move back to the plus column in the near future.

However arguing that an accounting staff is needed to ensure the company has success is an invalid argument. With or without them, the success of the business is not guaranteed. So the owner of the business should choose a very good accounting staff.

By doing this all the financial transactions and decisions are noted and studied. Only then can the company decide proper routes to take in its quest to return to the profit column..

Therefore profit & loss is just a simple accounting term. Aside from this term, you will also learn about net earnings, net income, net worth, dividends, etc.

The Universal Law of Thinking: The Importance of Controlling Your Thoughts to Achieve Success

.
.
The Law of Thinking is one of several Universal Laws which silently govern our lives. Yet it by mastering these laws and working in harmony with them that we achieve our greatest success in life.

However, with respect to the Universal Law of Thinking, are you really thinking or are you allowing someone else to do your thinking for you?

Earl Nightingale said once that if most people said what they were thinking that they would be speechless. You see many people allow their thoughts to be controlled by others - newspapers, magazines, television, radio and the like.

And, particularly during this current environment, when the economy is experiencing a downturn allowing your thinking to be controlled by those whose role seems to be to continually provide a stream of negative news this can be very dangerous indeed.

Thoughts are extremely powerful. Do not underestimate the power of thought just because it is not immediately visible. You cannot see a thought but you can see its effects.

"Mind is the master power that moulds and makes. And man is mind and ever more he takes the tool of thought and, shaping what he wills, brings forth a thousand joys, a thousand ills. He thinks in secret and it comes to pass, the environment is but his looking glass."
James Allen, "As a Man Thinketh"

In other words, as all the world's greatest thought leaders agree, you become what you think about and your external environment (in its broadest sense) is a direct reflection of internal environment or your thoughts.

At a fundamental level we are simply energy and, with Kirlian photography, we can even see how changing our thoughts change the energy signature that we emit or our aura. Energy therapists also have the ability to 'read' people's aura's with a high degree of accuracy. However, anyone has the ability to sharpen their acuity to sense what another person is thinking.

Scientists have proven that your thoughts travel 930,000 times faster than the speed of your voice. This is phenomenal and it underlines the importance of controlling your thinking. The thoughts you think on a regular basis will materialize and, in some cases, with alarming alacrity. No other Universal force is known to be as powerful or as fast.

Voltaire said:

"No problem can stand the assault of sustained thinking."

However, there is a pre-requisite to this - so long as you are thinking about the solution to the problem and not just focusing on the problem itself. Too many people focus on the problem and then wonder why things don't work out.

Many people think negative and expect positive but, of course, that isn't going to happen. Yet often, when you challenge such individuals about changing their thinking and practicing positive thinking their immediate rebuttal is that it is too hard. Albert Einstein said that:

"The world we have created is a product of our thinking; it cannot be changed without changing our thinking."

So if you want to change your life and resolve the problems you're experiencing you have to change your thinking. Yes, this can be a challenge but what's worse? Staying as you are even although you are dissatisfied and, in some cases downright miserable about your present situation, or changing your thinking to make it congruent with what you truly desire in your life?

However, remember that it took years of thinking to create the life you currently have. Change will not be instantaneous but it can be fast so long as you are persistent.

Einstein also said:

"We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them."

Yet this is exactly what many people are striving in vain to accomplish. To solve your current problems you not only have to change your thinking you also have to elevate your thinking. It follows therefore, that you must be on a continual path of self-improvement if you wish to advance in life and achieve your goals because you will not achieve your goals without encountering and vanquishing a few problems along the way.

The proper application of the Law of Thinking is critical to your success. Your thinking will shape your destiny.

"Thoughts lead on to purpose, purpose leads on to actions, actions form habits, habits decide character and character fixes our destiny."
Tryon Edwards

Stress at Work and Satisfaction

.
.
There appears little doubt that one of the major adverse influences on job satisfaction, work performance, absenteeism, turnover and productivity, is the incidence of stress at work. Stress is a source of tension and frustration that may arise through a number of interrelated influences on behavior, including the individual, group, organizational and environmental factors. In a recent survey into attitudes to work, when a random sample of 1,000 workers was asked to specify the biggest problem at work, the second most common response (after poor pay - 18%) was stress at 17%. This would seem to support the contention that stress is a problem of the nineties.

The causes of stress are complex. Stress is also a very personal experience, as is the response of each individual to it and their beliefs about how best to cope with the causes and the effects of stressful situations. Although considered as having a negative impact, a certain amount of stress may be seen as positive and even as a good thing, which helps and promotes a high level of performance. Keeping the balance is the challenging task of management.

The five situations that are most commonly considered as stressful are the following:

- Responsibility for the work of others - conflicting objectives of groups and organizations, groups and individuals, self and superiors.

- Innovative functions - conflicting priorities and different psychological demands between the routine and administrative aspects of the job and the creative side.

- Integrative or boundary functions - the stressful role of the coordinator, due to the lack of control over the demand of their resources.

- Relationship problems - difficulties with a boss, subordinates or colleges.

- Career uncertainty - doubtful future career prospects affect the whole of a person's work

There are a number of techniques by which individuals may bring stress under control. For example, changing your viewpoint; putting your problems into perspective; learning to laugh at life; not worrying and working on stress reduction; not talking yourself down; and not attempting to slow your life down.

In addition, companies have initiated internal programs to reduce the fatigue or stress from working on a specific position for a long period of time. In fact, job rotation is the most basic form of individual job design. It involves moving a person from one job or task to another. It attempts to add some variety and to help remove boredom, at leads in the short term. However, if the tasks involved are all very similar and routine, then once the person is familiar with the new task the work may quickly prove boring again.

Job rotation may lead to the acquisition of additional skills but does not necessarily develop their levels. Strictly, job rotation is not really job design, because neither the nature of the task nor the method of working is restructured. However, it may help a person identify more with the completed product or service. It can also be used as a form of training and it can reduce stress that is associated with managing the increased responsibilities of a specific role in a company.
