How To Get Promoted : 9 Obvious And Often Not Practiced Tips

It would be safe to say that you would have probably entertained the question of how to get promoted even before you graduated or left school. In my chats with juniors from my industry, I am often asked this question which I gladly answer. However, I sense they simply want short cuts to the next level.

These experiences pushed me to pen these 9 obvious but often not practiced tips on how to get promoted. Start internalizing these tips and make them part of your career plan. Before you know it, you would have moved up to the next level.

One main reason for people to ignore these obvious practices on how to get promoted is because they seem very long term. But they are not at all. All you need to do is to consistently DO them. I have broken them down to 3 main sections: Plan, Attitude and Action.

PLAN
1. Where Are You and Why Are You There?
How to get promoted? First you will need to have a reference point. Ask yourself, where are you now? And why are you there? Is there any key strength that has brought you where you are now that you can continue to leverage for the next promotion? Are there any weaknesses that you really need to correct before the next promotion is possible? These questions, while simple are strategic. It allows you to check your strengths and weaknesses. It forces you to access what has worked and what will work to get you promoted.

2. Where Do You Want To Be and How Do You Get There?
You obviously need to have an objective and a plan. Just saying that you want to get promoted is not enough. You need to be clear on your next position. Is it a promotion to a different department or a different branch? Write this down.

Now that you have written this down, how do you plan to get that promotion? Develop a plan for to achieve that objective. If you are lucky, you can even work this out with your immediate boss. Most bosses do not promise that promotion at such discussions but at the very least you get an idea of what are the expectations.

ATTITUDE
3. Put Pride, Passion and Belief In Everything You Do
People who get promoted are those that have a sense of pride in their work. And they take pride in their work. They are driven by genuine enthusiasm and desire to do their best no matter how small the job. They believe in themselves and they believe in the bigger goals of their unit or department and company. How to get promoted? Ask yourself; do you conduct yourself with pride, passion and belief?

4. Back it Up with Skills/Knowledge, Direction and Action
Having pride, passion and belief is only part of how to get promoted. It must be backed up skills and knowledge. That means having the necessary skills and knowledge to do a superb job. Having a direction is important to guide that energy generated by your passion. Otherwise, effort is wasted. Without action which is the actual completion of the task, all else is academic. You will be judged by what you do.

5. See Challenges As Opportunities
Another obvious tip on how to get promoted is to see challenges as opportunities. Very often I see young executives being thrown challenging assignments, which they choose to see as an additional chore. If you want to be promoted, look at challenges as opportunities to shine. Do not complain about hard work, how hard you worked or if your assignment is tougher than your colleagues’. Trust me, no one wants to know how hard you work. In everyone’s mind, their own work is the hardest.

ACTION
6. What Is Your Part?
Know your part and play your part. What is your role? Are you an implementer? Or are you a leader? Know exactly what you need to do in order for your unit to achieve its goals. Knowing your part means being a team player. No one can succeed without help from others. We all need the support of colleagues. When the team succeeds, you succeed too.

7. Do Your Best NOW
I consider this as one of the most important tip on how to get promoted. Do your best NOW. Today. This week’s tasks and projects. Do not bask in the glory of your previous work. That is gone. In all likelihood, no one else cares about it especially your bosses. Do not think too much about future projects that are not implemented yet. That is in the future. It is not here yet. Focus on DOING your best NOW. It determines how you are being judged. When you reflect too much on the past and think too much about the future, you forget to focus on the NOW

8. Do More Than Necessary
If you want to know how to get promoted, do more than the necessary. That means volunteering for work and taking the initiative to make a job better. It also means not sitting around waiting for work to come to you. Bosses like people who can help them solve problems. Even if the problem is not yours, but if you feel you can be of help and have the expertise to solve it, then volunteer to help. You become the team’s competitive advantage when you do that. And bosses like people who give their unit an advantage over the others. Helping your team stay ahead is then helping you stay ahead too.

9. Do Work from The Next Level Up
If you continue doing work for your current position then you truly deserve your current position. People who know how to get promoted know that if you want the position next level up, you start doing some of those work from that level now. If you are a senior executive now, do some work that is only expected of an assistant manager (assuming that is the next level up). This allows you to demonstrate that you are capable of that position already.

Obviously, there are zillions of tips out there on how to get promoted. These are some of those that I deem to be obvious and not practiced enough by career success seeking newbies. Putting these into practice would greatly increase your chances of a promotion.

What Job Suits Me? A Degree with No Job, Where Do I Start?

You have just graduated, and you are wondering "what job suits me"? Ideally, this should not have occurred if there was sufficient self-awareness and planning. That’s all water under the bridge now. Let’s move on to find a solution for it.

Before I move on to answer the question “What job suits me?”, I need you to first understand a few points.

The answer to the question "what job suits me" is simple, though the journey may not be as simple. That is something you have to keep in mind. I write this with experience. I have had many interview candidates passing through my door asking this question. Frustrating as it maybe, I have always used this as an opportunity to counsel them.

What job suits me? Here is my answer.

1. Think Positive - As You Think So You Are
I know it is tough not to have a job, and you're raring to go and build a career. Look at it this way; you have a degree. A qualification, regardless of how you look at it. How many people can claim that? All the things that you learned in these courses mean something to some employers out there. Think hard, surf the net to see who are in need of your skills. When you get ideas you won't feel so lost. You will begin to see hints of answers to what job suits you.

What if you don’t have a degree? Look at what qualifications you have. Think hard about those. What if you do not have any qualifications? Then think about what quality courses you can take, no matter how short it is, even if it is a certificate course. These will usually build into more skills and knowledge and start opening doors.

What if you have no money? Then, start low. Take an entry-level job to save up money. Tell yourself, this is but a step to finding the answer to what job suits me. The world conspires to help you achieve your dreams only if you are willing to sacrifice. How much commitment do you have in finding the answer to the question of “What job suits me?”

2. Think Interest, Feel The Passion
Grab a job that closest reflects what interests you and your knowledge. Do you like working in an office? If it is an office setting, what industry could it be? List it down and give yourself some criteria that helps you short-list the choices. It can be as simple as distance, size of company, type of industry, reasonable expected salary and so on and so forth.

Interest and passion is what will eventually guide you in your quest for the answer to "what job suits me". It’s tough to start but once you start, the small answers will eventually cumulate into a big answer. Say for example, you like meeting people, there are jobs out there that permits you that – a hotel receptionist, a salesperson, a tour guide, or even a bus driver job allows for that. Dig deep. No job is too small for anyone. Not especially if you are on a quest to find out what job suits you.

3. Start Somewhere
Ideally, you have a list of criteria, but experience tells me more often than not, that there will still be people who are too lazy to do that. Even after reading this, you are still looking for hints of a short cut. Let me remind you that there are no short cuts to "what job suits me".

What I can say is start somewhere. Shrink your ego and swallow your pride. Get an entry-level job. So what if you have to start at the very bottom? Do it, it may not be what you want but it will give you some sense of self-awareness – what you like and don’t like.

It may even provide you with real lessons in life like humility, honesty and being hard-working. Lessons are important in the journey of life.

4. Career Building Is A Journey
There is no need to rush. Yes, easier said than done but sometimes what seems to you as fumbling around is actually opportunities presenting itself. There are lessons to be learned everywhere and everyone we come in contact with can teach us a lesson or two. We just have to be conscious of it and learn from it.

Get into a temporary job that interests you. As you start, you will get to know people and soon one thing will lead to another. You will discover new strengths and interests and the opportunity will present itself. Therein may lie the answer "to what job suits me". Don't be afraid of being slow, worry only when you stop. Always keep walking.

To round this up, I have currently two staff working with me with qualifications totally unrelated to advertising. One has a B.Sc in Biotech, and another a B.Sc in Entomology. They too ‘fumbled’ through their careers. One has 10 years experience that started her career in a construction firm and eventually, advertising. The other started in a gift company before joining me, is only 2 years in advertising. They are doing very well in advertising and are even considered stars in my department.

It's all good. While there are no straight and simple answer to "what job suits me", the answer is always there to be discovered. Importantly, it can be discovered. Just make sure you have the stamina to take the journey and challenges.

Keep walking and good luck!

Career Success Factors: 5 Simple Ways for a Career Boost

It’s always tough to give advice on career success factors because there isn’t really a set of formula you can follow that can guarantee career success. A combination of various factors in the right context and with the right character will give your career a boost.

For senior executives, these 5 career success factors will probably work more as a reminder. For career newbies, especially if you are in your first year of work – these factors will be your guide to a career boost. Like all career advice I give, do not expect instant results. Practiced often and you will see the results.

1.NOW!
Do things NOW! Do not procrastinate. Nothing irks a manager more than a newbie at work that is already showing signs of lazing or taking short cuts. Attack your work immediately. Have a plan of attack to the work that is assigned to you.

Without procrastinating you can finish your work much earlier. This allows you to be assigned more work. As the trust with your supervisor increases, he/she will assign you more and more important work. Make a decision now to put in place a plan for this career success factor.

2.Next Steps
Never leave a meeting without clear next steps that you are required to complete. A date of when the work is expected to be completed by you is part of this next step. This also applies to your discussion with your supervisor. Always seek to clarify what’s needed from your end before you leave the discussion.

If you are lucky enough to be chairing any meetings or are a project leader, remember that listing the set of next steps or action plan is your responsibility. When you have clear next steps; who and when the task should be completed, you become productive. You get a career boost when you are productive. It is one of the easiest career success factors to practice.

3.Notice
No, I do not mean giving notice. Notice here means being a keen observer of things around you and people. Now, it doesn't mean being nosy and to start gossiping. Every office has their dynamics. Do not be pulled into the politics that can hurt your career at an early stage. Notice here means to observe and to take note of things. When you notice things you become more careful. You also become better at knowing how things work in the office. You will blend in better. Notice and learn what are the norms of the industry, the ethics and the legalities. Notice the corporate culture and who is in charge. Sometimes those truly in power are those who can influence the bosses.

4.Nice
Amongst all the career success factors, this is probably one that is the easiest to do. Being nice doesn’t mean you go around volunteering to make coffee for your colleagues. It can mean very simple and sincere greetings of “Good Morning.” It can also be a pleasant smile.

You need to be mindful to do this in order to transfer it to your colleagues. Ever noticed some people smile and greet for the sake of doing it? You can’t really feel that they mean it? All else being equal, being genuinely sincere and nice can give you a career boost.

One sub point I would add to this is to be neat. This means being organized, clean and orderly. As a freshie with these efficient behaviors, you become nice to work with, as you are productive.

5.Network
Sure, you are new to the industry. There are very few people you know. But that should not stop you from finding out where people hang out and when. Start with your colleagues first. Where do they go for lunch?

To network at a smaller scale is to get your face recognized. Then you can work on getting your name known. There is a caveat to this, while networking is one of the important career success factors - make sure you deliver good work. All the networking cannot give you a career boost if you do not deliver good work.

These career success factors work well for career newbies and can give you a career boost. But remember to seek to do great work first before thinking about how you can boost your career.

SELF-PROMOTE USING A POWERFUL PITCH

You meet important job search contacts every day. The people you meet when you complete routine tasks, such as shopping or taking your children to the local ball field, may know the person you want to meet or they may have friends or family working in the industry you are targeting. Plan to use the first 30 seconds of every initial face to face meeting to deliver a brief “infomercial”. Start with a smile and make eye contact before you deliver the introduction you have prepared.
Don’t worry about looking too pushy. People generally like to talk about their jobs and most are more than willing to provide assistance to folks looking for opportunities in their field. In addition, since employers tend to hire qualified people that are recommended by their employees, by using this opportunity to advance your career, you have also provided an occasion for the person you are meeting to gain recognition in their workplace.
Prepare a 15-30 second sound bite that highlights your uniqueness in a pleasant, but persuasive, manner. You will grab the attention of more listeners when you prepare your introduction based on the question “What’s In It for me?” from the perspective of potential employers. For example, what have you done to improve revenues, increase production, or reduce costs at your present or past jobs, or through your association with any volunteer or leisure-related organizations?
Be concise, but make the first minute count by offering information that you have determined will interest the person you are meeting. Think of the benefits you offer your clients, customers, co-workers, and supervisor. If you are not sure, ask them, you will discover that they rightfully value actions that you take for granted.
A script is an extremely helpful tool to use when you are making calls, meeting peers at an industry tradeshow, or preparing for an interview. Verbal profile statements should communicate three key pieces of information: your name, your area of expertise and related accomplishments. For example
I am OCCUPATION NAME OR JOB TITLE who is interested in finding employment with companies that specialize in SPECIFY. Having worked (or studied) for COMPANY OR SCHOOL NAME the past NUMBER of years, I have expertise in TWO OR THREE KEY AREAS.
Cold calling can be effective, but taking time to contact the people in your existing network may be less intimidating and can bring about the same results. Practice your speech with friends and family, or record it on your answering machine, and listen to it.
Plan to practice your introduction the next time you meet a new contact. Then, plan to tweak sections that you found too chatty or sentences that did not flow. In time, you will find using your power introduction effortless and the associated rewards beneficial as you manage your career advancement.

Are you looking for a job or waiting for a job?

Are you looking for a job -- really looking? Or are you simply waiting for employment to fall into your lap?
If you're like about 75% of the job seekers I've met over the past nine years, you're probably doing too much waiting and not enough searching.

Stop.
Now.
Instead, here are two ways to be more proactive -- and much more effective -- in your job search.

1) Stop waiting for job leads to appear. Start making your own.

Here's a real estate analogy that directly relates to your job search. (Trust me.)

Where would you rather buy a 3-bedroom house, in Japan or the United States?

Considering the price would be about $2 million in Japan vs. about $200,000 in the US, you'd likely opt for an American home. And why is Japanese real estate so pricey? Mainly because only about 15% of Japan is habitable. The remaining 85% of land there is too mountainous to build on. So prices are driven into the stratosphere by the intense competition for prime real estate.

Well, the traditional employment market is just like Japanese real estate.

Advertised job openings -- those listed on the Internet or in newspaper classifieds -- are only about 15% of the market. Yet, this is where about 80-90% of job seekers spend most of their time looking … so the competition is fierce. And, like Japanese real estate, you are far less likely to find what you want.

It's far better to spend most of your time looking for jobs that are not advertised, since you'll have less competition.

And how can you find unadvertised job leads? The two best ways I know are:

1. Calling employers to ask for an interview
2. Networking more effectively

Since so many people get networking so wrong, I'll tackle that one next …

2) Stop waiting for people to hand you job leads. Start networking right.

Here's a recent email from an unhappy job seeker with a common -- and completely wrong -- negative attitude about networking:

Past experience has shown that most people will only help you when it directly benefits them, such as when there is an incentive hiring plan. For many years, I have tried to keep in touch with numerous people I knew very well. Most refuse to even answer. No returned emails, calls, etc. If people won't even answer, they certainly will not help you. I would speculate that 98% of the time when I contact past acquaintances, I get the cold shoulder.

Jim, Pennsylvania

Like most job hunters who network unsuccessfully, Jim is asking the wrong questions. And getting the wrong answers. And not getting hired.

Instead of, "Why won't anyone return my calls or give me job leads?" Jim (and you) should ask, "How could I give people a reason to contact me with job leads?" This simple change in mindset will make all the difference. Try it and see.

Here are more questions to ask yourself if your networking is not panning out.

- How can I make networking a two-way street, and do something that benefits the people I want job leads from?
- What news/tips/advice/suggestions could I give to people in my network FIRST, which would ethically obligate them to help me in return?
- Who else could I be networking with?
- How many new people have I met this week who could give me job leads AFTER I help them out in some way?

I've said this before, and I'll say it again: Networking is like skiing. If you give up and say, "It didn't work for me," it's because you weren't doing it right. Period.

Here's hoping these two ways to uncover job leads and network better will help you get hired fast. Now, go out and make your own luck!

I Hate My Job: Do What You Love Or Love What You Do?

Just by observation and the feedback I get, I must say there are more people out there who say "I hate my job" more than “I love my job”. Perhaps what is more frustrating is that most of these people do not really know what they want, spend too much time talking and complaining rather than acting upon their dreams or aren’t even ready for the changes that will take place when they change jobs. Or think about changing jobs.

Passion: Follow Your Passion
Sure, the first thing conventional wisdom or common sense career advice will tell you is to follow your passion. Especially when you are one of those who complains about “I hate my job” constantly. The cliché advice is that when you do what you love you need not work another day of your life. That is true. But it is also true that many people put here aren’t exactly working out their passion but is enjoying every minute of it.

Let’s face it, the only reason why we read about people living out their passion as what we know as "work" is because it is an interesting story to tell. Everybody loves motivating stories like that so the media features them - the investment banker who became a scuba dive instructor full time, living in a chalet facing the beach and drinks juices with little umbrellas in them! More romantic so to speak.

The problem is that when you complain about “I hate my job”, and when you read stories like that you fail to see what is the process that person living his passion went thorough in order to get there. It could take years and years of hard work, href="http://www.career-success-for-newbies.com/seven-habits-highly-successful-people.html">conviction and patience. Not including lots of disruption in life that a 800 word magazine article does not cover.

So, before you say “I hate my job and I want to live my passion” again, let’s stop and think what you are ready for. Now, I am not saying that you cannot, should not and will not live your dreams. In fact, I encourage you to. I am merely saying, please be ready for a lot of uncertainties that will come along with discovering yourself and what you love doing.

Passion and Vocation
There is nothing wrong with pursuing your passion and making that passion your work. One thing you need to think clearly about is the fact that, just as there are many facets to your live – you may have many passions too. So, which one are you going to pursue and which will give you the kind of monetary returns you are willing to sacrifice for? Passion and vocation are very different things. One is perhaps, for the ease of discussion a hobby - the other is work. Let’s be clear about it each time you say, “I hate my job”.

If you want to pursue your passion as work - what have you done about it? Let’s make sure your dreams meets with action. That’s what is real. If you want to own an online store to sell cell phone accessories, what have you done about it? Have you researched enough? Have you tried getting a part time job in a store to get some experience? Spend some time doing some experiments and test to see if you like it. Test to see if your commitment matches your conviction before you say, “I hate my job.”

Sometimes you maybe good at something but you do not have passion for it. But one can find new passions. Have you tried loving what you do? Millions of unsung heroes who do not get featured in magazines and books out there love what they do. What they do may not be what they have a passion for, but they gradually learned to love it and love the role of that work in their lives. And one may add, their role of at work and the role of that work to the community that they serve.

Pursuing your passion as work takes sacrifice. Sure, it is cool to say you are pursuing what you love. But remember that the price of being cool is a lot of sacrifice that you may not even see now. What is the price you are willing to pay to see your dreams or passion to fruition? Those are some of the things they do not write into those cool career-changing articles that you read. Are you read for those sacrifices?

Career success can mean many things to many people. What does it mean to you? You need to find that meaning before you say, “I hate my job.” Perhaps you never did learn to love your job in the first place. Or perhaps, you have been too myopic on your view of what work should be and is to you. Try a different route and see if it works. Do not just sit and complain. Do something about it and remember that change takes conviction, time, patience and hard work.

You can be the person that gets featured in career success articles but remember it takes a lot more that just saying “I hate my job.” It takes action to meet with dreams; conviction to meet commitment, time, patience and working hard to make sure hard work pays off.

Job Seeking

The Internet has made employment in the 21st century an activity that unifies all members of society, whether you have just left school, college, university, or are assessing other possible career pathways or opportunities, which are different to your current position.
These processes however can be time consuming, and the information the user gains can often be inappropriate, or too basic/specific in its findings, making it difficult to know for some users where to begin searching for jobs or career options.
The best way to counter-act this is to start choosing websites like doctorjobs.com, or Topjobs.com, which will help provide you with interesting and easy-on-the-eye job information, with career tips and links to other web sites concerning job searching. This will allow you to cover a broad, yet varied database of job information and actual job seeking, meaning you can become more specific in your pursuit of employment as time goes on, and you become more aware of the options open to you. If you are unsure and wish to seek advice, websites usually provide career guidance councillors online or ‘agony aunt’ services allowing any specific questions you have to be answered directly and promptly.
Users may also be interested in the networking possibilities the discussion group websites have, as a compliment to the job banks and resumes/CV databases most companies on the web offer. The Internet is also an excellent medium for finding out about job opportunities abroad (see our networking database on www.onrec.com for possible sites that may aid you in your search).
The main piece of information I have found useful is that when looking or researching possible vacancies or career options, try not to limit your ideas. Use as many different search engines as you can in order to see new websites you (and therefore other potential jobseekers) might not have heard of (www.google.com is a very good website to start with).
If you have a specific job or career in mind, try entering or looking for jobs specifically in these alternate search engines. You will be amazed at how many websites there are designed for your particular choices that you may have missed by looking at web pages which provide information on too general a scale. Websites also tend to offer precise company profiling and information that will prove useful in interviews or assessing its problems and benefits to you as a potential employee. Once you start to explore the wide range of possible websites and information created specifically for you in mind, you will be able to find it an unconventional, efficient, and cost effective means of job researching.

Can You Attract a New Job?

Ever had a new job just sort of fall into your lap?
I'll bet it's happened at least once to you or someone you know

Perhaps you got a phone call from an old friend who referred you to a hiring manager. Or an email from a relative urging you to apply at their company.

Wouldn't it be nice if there were a way to "attract" more job opportunities like this?

Well, I believe there is

I believe that job search "luck" can be created, based on my 11 years of helping and observing thousands of job seekers. And plenty of others agree, including Lynn Ahearn, a Certified Law of Attraction Practitioner and Founder of Life Success Coaching (www.lifesuccesscoaching.net).

Ahearn tells the story of one client who quickly "attracted" her dream job as a result of taking the right action

"During our conversations, she remembered an old passion for undersea adventure -- something she had forgotten about for years," recalls Ahearn. Her client did some research, and found the name of a renowned author who was doing work that really resonated with her. She sent him an email and, about 45 days later, was hired as his assistant.

According to Ahearn, there are three steps to take if you want to experience the same sort of "magnetic job search." Here they are ...

"First, get clear about the job you want. This can be difficult for many people, who do not truly know what they want to do," says Ahearn, who believes it's often easier to describe what you hate about work. So she asks people to list the things they don't want, then she takes them in the opposite direction to write down a description of their ideal job.

"Second, you must get in vibrational alignment with your target job," says Ahearn.

This is related to the idea that success breeds success. By thinking and feeling more like you already have the job you want, opportunities will start to appear, almost as if by magic. I've seen it happen too many times to discount the idea.

Example: One of my clients, Jaime, a project manager from St. Peter, Minnesota, had not one or two but four different job opportunities to choose from. The positions were all attractive (from $70,000 to $90,000 in salary) and he interviewed at least twice with each company. One success led to another in his job search.

Or Marc, a computer technician client of mine from Bartlett, Illinois. He writes: "I accepted a position today. It's actually amusing because now that I got this, other offers are rolling in. A company I interviewed at two months ago called me back with another position. I already accepted the other job, so I had to decline."

What if you don't have any job interviews on the horizon? One way to get into alignment and create an attractive, internal feeling of success is by re-reading the description of your ideal job, until you get really excited about it. "Know that this job is a perfect match and that it is on its way to you," Ahearn suggests.

The third step is to be open to receiving the job you want. "While you're taking inspired action, listen to your intuition and be open to opportunities," says Ahearn. As long as you are absolutely clear about your target job and are taking at least one step each day toward it, you'll get there following this advice.

The key phrase here is: "Listen to your intuition and be open to opportunities."

I like to think of intuition as your subconscious mind's way of trying to tell you something. When you act on hunches -- sending an email to an industry expert you've always wanted to meet, or turning a polite elevator conversation into a job lead, for example -- you'll get more of them. Because you tend to get more of what you reinforce.

Also, it helps to relax and avoid trying to push too hard toward your next job. Easier said than done, right? Especially if you have bills to pay.

But picture this: If someone offered you a $100 bill, would you reach for it with a clenched fist? Of course not. You can't grab money -- or anything -- with a fist. You have to relax and open your hand before you can receive.

It's the same with your job search. If you're a walking, talking, clenched-up ball of stress, fewer people are going to want to be around you, which will hinder your networking. And employers will sense your anxiety in an interview, which makes you a less-attractive candidate. So try to relax and defuse physical tension with regular exercise, plenty of sleep and a healthy diet.

By giving this three-step method a try -- becoming clear about the position you want, getting in "vibrational alignment" with that job, and being open to receiving it -- you may find that your dream job is attracted to you magnetically and almost effortlessly.

Positive Attitude in The Workplace For Newbies Seeking Career Success

Your positive attitude in the workplace determines how far you can go in your career. Have you thought about what are some of your positive attitudes in the workplace? Spend some time thinking about your work attitude if you are a newbie seeking career success.

Throughout my career I have had the privilege to work under some of the best people in my industry. Coupled with the numerous self-improvement books I read, one day I found myself asking, “How would I define my attitude in the workplace that will propel my career success?” Specifically, what would be my positive attitudes at work?

I nailed them down into 3 words that would be my positive attitudes in the workplace. These were Pride, Passion and Belief.

However, as the years went by I realized that they are only part of the equation. To balance these attitudes there were another side. I was still a newbie seeking career success when I held these to be my guiding principles.

The other side of the equation was Skills/Knowledge, Direction and Action. These together with Pride, Passion and Belief became what I practiced as my positive attitude in the workplace. I believe these to be relevant for newbie seeking career success now, too. It is relevant to be used as anyone’s work attitude for positive results.

1. Pride and Skills/Knowledge
Pride in my personal definition as a positive attitude in the workplace is taken to mean self-dignity. It means the realization that everything you do has your personal signature on it. When you realize this, you give everything assigned to you your best shot.

However, there is a danger here. That danger is excessive pride without the necessary skills and knowledge is arrogance.

So, Pride – Skills/Knowledge = Arrogance

This equation of positive attitude in the workplace has to go hand in hand. It has to be in good balance. What about doing your work with just skills and knowledge and with no pride? Well, you end up with mediocre work. You get it right but it wouldn’t be the best. Is this your attitude in the workplace?

Hence, Skills/Knowledge – Pride = Mediocre Work

When you add this set of positive attitudes in the workplace together, pride and skills/knowledge – what do you get?

Pride + Skills/Knowledge = The Best Work Each Time

2. Passion and Direction
Passion as a positive attitude in the workplace is the burning desire and love for the work that you do, which will pull you through the tough times. It is an intense enthusiasm that all things worth doing are worth doing well.

However, like the previous set of positive attitudes in the workplace it needs to be balanced by another factor - Direction. Your enthusiasm and burning desire must be harnessed to focus on the objectives at hand for it to show positive results. Passion without direction would just mean wasted energy.

Passion – Direction = Wasted Energy

What about Direction without Passion? Well, what if you know where you want to go but do not have the fuel for it? It just means success takes longer to achieve, if ever.

Direction – Passion = Success Takes Far Longer, If Ever

When you add direction and passion as positive attitude in the workplace you get goals galore!

Passion + Direction = Goals Galore

3. Belief and Action
My last equation of positive attitude in the workplace involves belief and action. The more your personal belief is aligned to the organization you are attached to the better your chances for career success. A deep believe in yourself will create the vigor and force that fuels your journey of seeking career success.

This belief must be balanced with action. Action means making your plans work. It means doing. Working. A believe that is not backed by a plan of action is just fantasies.

Belief – Action = Fantasies

What if you work your plans without a belief? Anyone without believe in themselves and their dreams but continue to work their plans is a fool at work.

Action – Belief = Fool at Work

When you are able to synergize believe and action into one, your dreams come true!

Belief + Action = Dreams Come True

Positive Attitude in the Workplace
When you are able to harness the equation these 3 sets of positive attitude in the workplace into one – reaching for the star becomes a reality. In fact, as a newbie seeking career success – when you internalize this positive attitude in the workplace into your work attitude YOU ARE A STAR!

I Hate My Job: What Does It Take To Change Jobs?

Should you even change jobs, when you catch yourself saying, “I hate my job”? Frankly, I do not have the answer, but what I will attempt to do here is to show you that the path to changing jobs is not a linear one. Finding that answer is a painful path because of the uncertainty that it takes you. Having quit from my job twice to dabble in two very different fields has taught me that there are no clear one-stop answers.

People tend to think that when they start thinking ‘I hate my job’, that’s when they should quit. Perhaps so, but more often than not they find themselves back in the loop that they wanted to get out from in the first place. Learning what you want to do is like finding ourselves. It is a tough journey and one that we may not even have an ‘actual’ answer for this lifetime.

No Overnight Solution
There are no overnight solutions to the challenge of ‘I hate my job’. To change your job and to find one that you truly like takes time. And time means patience. There are two routes that you can take; one that is commonly practiced, which is to find out what you really want then, and quit your current job. But of course, I have also seen people who quit their current job then find another one that they like.

Both have worked for different people. The only problem is for you to think which one suits you best. The latter provides for a lot of uncertainties. And if you have the financial capabilities and is willing to sacrifice your savings in order to get the ideal job then you are maybe more ready than others.

The challenge is this, sometimes even after finding what is deemed the ideal job it still does not satisfy you. What do you do then? Well, do not let the experience go to waste. Which is why finding that elusive dream job takes time, patience and hard work. Each job that you move to teaches you something about yourself. You need to be sure you are able to pin point what it is that teaches you about yourself and your view about work. That way, each time you say, “I hate my job” and quit it helps you progress closer to your goal.

Time
Changing jobs takes a lot of sacrifice especially when you quit without knowing what you want to do next. Money is definitely one of them, and then time in order to find another job. Assuming you find a job fairly quickly, you need to think about the time needed to start all over again with the new company. There will also be uncertainties you need to grapple with from the moment you put in your resignation letter till you have settled into your new job.

Patience
It takes a lot of patience not knowing when you will get a job, and in the longer term what you want to do with your life. There is also a lot of patience involved in experimenting with different jobs trying to find your ‘true’ self. I used ‘true’ in quotes because the working self that you know is obviously a facet of what you are and not the actual total self. Hence, this journey of self-discovery will take a lot of patience. It is not going to be easy and there are no straight answers any career gurus can point you towards.

Hard Work
Changing jobs is hard work. Changing jobs in order to find what you love is even harder work. So, let no one tell you once you have quit and changed jobs you will find nirvana to your career success. There are no such easy answers neither for newbies at work nor veterans. The experiments of doing work either on the side after your full time job, during weekends to try out if you like certain jobs or quitting outright to experiment will take a lot of work. It will also take a lot of hard work to figure out what really suits you and what it is that you are pursing with your new career.

Humble Enough?
Perhaps you should also start thinking if you have tried hard enough at your current job before you say, “I hate my job”. It is far too easy to say that and blame others. It is far too easy to give up than to say, “I will find other ways to make this work.” Self-discovery takes time and with work is the same. It takes time. Have you taken enough time to understand the work you are currently doing? Time and effort to understand the people you are currently working with?

Please do not think that the perfect career is around the corner. People who found happiness and satisfaction from their work took years to find it. More importantly, there aren’t jobs in this world that pays a lot for little sacrifice whether in terms of time or effort. If there are, they are usually known as get rich quick schemes

So, before you say, “I hate my job” one more time – perhaps you should understand your role at work and know the role of work in your life. More importantly, make sure you accomplish something daily at work and then see of you go home more fulfilled and satisfied.
