It can be a nerve-wrecking prospect to think about your impending job interview. What will you say? How will you dress? What if the interviewer asks questions for which you don’t know the answers? These are all questions you may run through your mind before ever meeting the prospective employer.


But while interviews can be intimidating, they don’t have to be feared – especially if you come equipped with the right knowledge. So let’s look at three tips that can help you place the job you want in the palm of your hands.
If you use all three tips correctly you will conclude your job interview with success.

Tip #1: Conduct Practice Q&A Sessions

Before you ever set foot on the property of your prospective employer, it is important that you mentally prepare for the challenge you’re up against. Being that you’ve never interviewed before, it may seem impossible to prepare for the unknown. But luckily for you, there are bound to be some individuals in your life who have been on job interviews. So give them a job of helping you prepare.

A good way to start your preparation is by first conducting some research on the company you are interested in working for. After you’ve learned the company’s overall mission, what they look for in employees, and most importantly, what they want in the hiring position, you can give this information to your helper. Then he or she can compose interview questions, have you show up for the mock interview in full attire, and ask the questions so that you can begin to feel comfortable with the process.

Tip #2: Dress for Success

This is probably one of the more important aspects of interviewing for any position, no matter how casual you think it might be. The prospective employer wants to confirm how serious you are about the job, something that is partially accomplished by dressing up in business attire for the interview.

While this may seem to be common sense to some, there are many newcomers to the world of interviewing who show up wearing khaki pants or low-cut tops. So if you already knew that wearing a business suit (clean with no wrinkles) is the way to go, good job. But if you were just about to walk out of the door in your T-shirt and khakis, you may want to go change your clothes.

Tip #3: Speak from the Heart

Starting off in your practice Q&A session, and eventually transitioning into your actual interview, it is important that you place personal value on your decision to apply for the job. If you go into the interview thinking that you won’t like the job, the interviewer might sense the apprehension and pass you up for the position. However, if you come in genuinely enthusiastic about the position, it will be much easier for you to find the right words to express that enthusiasm.

If you follow these three tips, you’ll be that much closer to securing the job of your dreams. So practice, practice, practice with your Q&A session, go buy a suit that makes you feel comfortable, and go to the interview with great passion. You’ll see that your budding confidence in your interviewing skills will skyrocket in time for your very first interview.

Police, fired workers clash at One and Only Reethi Rah Maldives

Police and striking workers clashed on Sunday at a luxury Maldives resort on an atoll in the Indian Ocean, police and protesters said.

The strike at the One and Only Reethi Rah resort began on Friday when the workers demanded better conditions and the transfer of a manager. Thirteen employees were fired on Saturday but refused to leave and police arrived on Sunday.

"They were beating me as they arrested me. They tied my hands at the back and pushed me on the ground," Ahmed Easa, one of about 200 workers taking part in the protest, told Reuters.

Other workers said they were beaten with batons.

About 200 guests were staying at the resort, where the cheapest room, a beach villa, costs $780 a night during the low season.

Tourism accounts for 28 percent of the Maldives' $800 million-a-year economy but many in the nation of 300,000 Sunni Muslims say that only a few people have grown wealthy from it.

Police Commissioner Ahmed Faseeh said officers briefly arrested some workers but released them.

"They have exaggerated what happened," he said.

Protesters were still on the atoll on Sunday and the resort said it was in talks with the government to resolve the strike.

It is the first accusation of heavy-handed action by police since President Mohamed Nasheed was sworn earlier this month after defeating 30-year incumbent Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who was criticised for setting police on opponents and protesters. (Writing by Bryson Hull; Editing by Angus MacSwan)

General Duties Include but are not limited to:

Requirements

RESORT, ISLAND EXPERIENCE IS PREFERRED

Associates Degree in Hospitality, or related field, five years bar experience mandatory, two years of supervisory/managerial experience required, and/or a combination of education and experience. Strong leadership skills an asset.

The idea didn't thrill me but I knew that if I was going to continue to be able to make my mortgage payments, a part time job is what I needed. I hadn't work two jobs in years and it almost seemed like I was moving backwards even though I had a professional career. I felt embarrassed and almost as if I was a failure. I didn't realize that a large number of people are in my same situation and having to find a part time job to make ends meet.

A part time job for few hundred dollars extra every month

I had not a clue where to begin my part time job search or even what I wanted to be searching for. Most part time jobs don't pay very well and I needed a few hundred dollars extra every month. After working at my full time job during the daytime, I had to wonder what kind of job I could even tolerate in the evenings and on weekends. I looked into a few different part time jobs but nothing interested me enough to work lots of extra hours. I knew quite a few people who had used employment agencies to find their jobs, so I took that route as well. I still found nothing that paid what I needed. I finally got into ebay and did begin to make some extra money on a monthly basis. But, everyone has their own interests, needs and desires to get ahead in life. I was not thrilled to have a part time job, but I know that it is what I have to do in order to get out of debt and pay my bills. I'm hoping that a part time job is simply a temporary necessity for me until my credit cards are paid off. At that point, perhaps I can go back to simply working a full time job.

HRCM calls on employers to comply with Employment Act

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has called on all employers, including tourist resorts, to afford their employees the full enjoyment of their rights under the Employment Act 2008. In a statement issued on Sunday HRCM expressed that the necessary support and cooperation is got been afforded to enjoyment of human rights under Employment Act 2008 by concerned parties. The statement said that resort managements have told employees that they were not aware of the Employment Act which protects the rights of the workers and that it is not clear which government authority takes the responsibility for ensuring the rights of the workers. The HRCM statement expressed that while a law has been passed on the protection of the rights of the workers, it is incumbent on every element of the society to fully observe the law, including government authorities, private entities, as well as specific individuals. The statement also noted that it is the responsibility of the employers to ensure that their employees get the full enjoyment of human rights under 2008 Employment Act. The commission has called for a responsible monitoring system to monitor that resort management fully abides the Employment Act 2008 with any exceptions. President of Tourism Employees Association of Maldives (TEAM) Ahmed Easa speaking to Miadhu Daily expressed that most of the resort do not abide by the Employment Act although some resorts have begun following the law effective from 1 November 2008. He revealed that different resorts have different interpretation of the law. He said this is reflected in the break times, duty hours, and overtime provided. “The law is being acted up differently in different resorts; some resorts do not recognize food breaks as duty hours, some resorts consider food breaks as break time and exclude it from 9 hours duty time” Easa said. TEAM expressed that while the tourism industry is the country’s main economic lifeline, adequate attention is not given by the government and industry stakeholders to solve the matter. TEAM further expressed that issuing press statements and announcements cannot be considered as a solution and that if the law cannot be enforced there is no point in having a law. While some resorts workers have completed their protests and demonstrations to obtain their rights other resort workers have are getting ready to stage their protests. Labor Relations Authority on the 2 of this month has urged all industry stakeholders to fully comply with Maldives Employment Act. The first amendment to Maldives Employment Act was passed by the People’s Majlis on 30 October 2008.
